Never have I been so moved by a sequence to exclaim in wonder and really shed tears of joy on the beauty that surrounds us in this wonderful planet.

I were watching it on Discovery HD Theater when it premiered in March. The 1st episode “Pole to Pole” set the tone by showing the variety of life and species that exist on the earth. The following episodes delve into the habitats one at a time. Mountains, Fresh Water, Caves, Deserts, Ice Worlds, Great Plains, Jungles, Shallow Seas, Seasonal Forests and Deep Ocean are the following episodes. That’s one series that should be seen to be believed of what the intrepid cameramen of BBC/Discovery Channel had been capable of capture through their sheer perseverance in remote locations. The HD technology has captured some scenes and pictures never seen before and a few seen before but never with this clarity and charm. 5 years, 62 countries and 204 locations is what it took to make this series, and the result’s a life-time TV series.

This is one series that fascinated my kid up to it amazed me. She desired to watch her cartoons however the moment the episode began she was captivated. Either one of us shared together the beauty that may be our Planet and it was she who mentioned the topic of what we would be doing to it by our actions. We cried after we saw how polar bears have begun to drown as ice melts faster yearly. A dead ringer for one lone bear looking to walk on ice but falling into the slushy waters, and having to swim longer distances to capture food and at last dying with exhaustion was heart breaking. The series makes no references to the current conditions, just in passing as with the polar bear. i feel the administrators and producers of the series just desired to show us the great thing about the flora and fauna, the fight for survival of several animals even if there is no such thing as a climactic change. And as we keep watching and are jam-packed with awe and wonderment that we’re lucky enough to survive this planet, we commence to understand quietly in our hearts how we have to change today in order for we save our planet.

That is what my daughter felt on her own, she asked me why we weren’t doing more to avoid wasting our flora and fauna and that i didn’t have any good answers. The last 3 episodes, Planet Earth: The long run delve deeper into these issues, which i have not had of venture to peer yet.

I watched a clip of David Attenborough’s version video on the net before i began watching the series with Sigourney Weaver’s narration, and that i was disappointed by her blandness and absence of depth. i purchased this set like many others to hear Sir David’s narration. i used to be torn between the regular DVD set and the HD DVD though. This series is nice enough to make me buy an HD DVD player simply to be capable of watch it in its true form! However, the regular set has the longer term series and the Planet Earth diaries which the HD set doesn’t have. I loved the Planet Earth Diaries (or behind the curtain) with cameramen, it made an enchanting documentary on it’s own, and wished some were longer. In the event that they had the additional material within the HD DVD set, it’d had been my first choice.

I had saved the invention HD Theatre epidodes on my HD Cable box and that i was ready to compare their image quality with this Standard DVD version playing on an upconverting DVD player. The invention Theater images were crystal clear, and also you could literally see each grain of sand at the sea bed or each crevice on a rock face. The common-or-garden DVD looked pretty good when upconverted to 720p and if I had not seen the HD version i’d had been quite amazed with the picture quality. At present i have been spoilt by the invention Theater version. In case you are considering the HD version it is a great choice in case you have an HD DVD/BluRay player. You’ll likely not see an easier HD disc. This series was shot completely in HD format. From my experience within the media industry i will inform you that this can be a very, very expensive format to shoot in especially given the 5 years that it took to make this series. Most television is shot in a standard digital format after which upconverted to the HD format later. That offers great images but they can not compare to something shot totally in HD. That’s the reason the picture quality of this series is spectacular. In HD they were ready to capture the action which when replayed in slow-motion also stays crystal clear. Therefore you’ve breathtaking images of a shark capturing its prey (and so on) in slo-mo.

This really is the set to shop. It’s like a living documentation of the great thing about our earth, a number of which was beginning to disappear right because the cameras were rolling. Perhaps, this is the reason BBC and Discovery spared free of charge to provide this series and this can be a masterpiece.

Like most baby boomers, I’ve watched this film dozens of times earlier on broadcast TV, then VHS tape, then LaserDisc … but I had never actually SEEN “The Wizard of Oz” until this newly restored DVD came out. It’s an excellent transfer. The sepia-tone Kansas sequences are startlingly sharp and clear, and the Technicolored world “Over the Rainbow” is actually dazzling. i discovered myself taken with details I had never noticed before: the glittering corn stalks inside the Scarecrow’s field; the mirror-like floors of the Emerald City; the polished buttons at the guardsmen’s uniforms. Incredibly, even the person grains of red sand within the Witch’s hourglass stood out and glistened! These kinds of minor-but-sumptuous visual details served to intensify the mystical spell that the film has always woven, enhancing the performances, the tale, and the music. The DVD extras are a mind-boggling embarrassment of riches. The “Making Of” documentary hosted by the incomparable Angela Lansbury is definitely worth the price of the DVD alone, but there’s a lot more: an international poster gallery, interviews with cast members, deleted scenes, production stills, radio clips, etc, etc. There’s enough material to maintain even the foremost casual viewer fascinated for hours, and a real Oz buff will be occupied for days!In case you only bought a DVD player to monitor this one disc, it’s going to well be definitely worth the expense. Treat yourself, and fall in love with this classic film again … for the primary time.

Gone with the Wind (70th Anniversary Edition) [Blu-ray] – $24.98

It sort of feels like a ‘new, improved’ edition of “Gone With the Wind” has appeared every couple of years, offering the ‘ultimate’ in picture and sound reproduction, and extras. It could become expensive maintaining, and frustrating (very like buying a classic Disney DVD, while you know a more complete “Special Edition” will soon render your “First Time on Video” copy obsolete), however the new GWTW Four-Disc Collector’s Edition most assuredly deserves an area on your collection.

First off, the image and sound quality is astonishing. Warner’s Ultra-Resolution process, which ‘locks’ the 3 Technicolor strips into exact alignment, provides a clarity and ‘crispness’ to the pictures that even the 1939 original print couldn’t achieve. You’ll honestly believe your TV is picking up HD, whether you’re HD-ready, or not! This carries over to the Dolby Digital-remastered sound, besides. All the tell-tale hiss and scratchiness of the outlet credit title music, still discernable within the last upgrade, is gone, replaced by a richness of tone on the way to give your own home theater a very good workout. (Take heed to the brass on this sequence, and you may notice what I’m talking about…)

The biggest selling point of this edition is, for sure, the 2 discs of extra features offered, and these are, mostly, superb. Beginning with the comprehensive “Making of a Legend” (narrated by Christopher Plummer), Disc Three offers fascinating overviews concerning the film, the superb restoration, footage from the 1939 Premiere (and the bittersweet 1961 Civil War Centennial reunion of Selznick, Leigh, and de Havilland), glimpses of Gable and Leigh with dubbed voices for the foreign-language versions, the international Prologue (tacked directly to explain the Civil War to foreign audiences), and a 1940 MGM documentary at the “Old South” (directed by Fred Zinneman) memorable today for it’s simplistic view of the time, and stereotypical portrayal of blacks.

Disc Four is a mixed bag; the long-awaited reminiscences of Olivia de Havilland are more chatty than informative (with the 90-year-old actress more desirous about discussing her wardrobe than on-set tension…although a prank she pulled on Gable is amusing), and the Clark Gable Profile is superficial (A&E’s biography of ‘The King’ is way superior). Things improve, however, with the insightful, sympathetic TCM biography of Vivien Leigh (hosted by Jessica Lange), and a superb section dedicated to brief bios of a few of the GWTW supporting cast, narrated, again, by Christopher Plummer (although I wish the filmmakers would have included bios for Ward Bond, Victor Jory, Fred Crane, and George ‘Superman’ Reeves).

All in all, the GWTW Four-Disc Collector’s Edition isn’t perfect, but offers most terrific material that it’s CERTAINLY the only to possess!

Period romance. War epic. Family saga. Popular fiction adapted with crowd-pleasing brilliance. Star acting aglow with charisma and fervour. Moviemaking craft at its height. These are sublimely joined within the words Gone with the Wind.

This dynamic and sturdy screen entertainment of the Civil War-era South comes home with the renewed splendor of a brand new 70th-Anniversary Digital Transfer capturing an improved-resolution image from Restored Picture Elements than ever before possible. David O. Selznick’s monumental production of Margaret Mitchell’s Pulitzer Prize-winning book can now enthrall new generations of home viewers with an impressive vibrance that befits considered one of Hollywood’s greatest achievements.

Inception (Two-Disc Edition) [Blu-ray] – $35.99

At the surface Inception looks a criminal offense caper, complete with master of disguise Eames (Tom Hardy), planner Aridane (Ellen Page), point man Arthur (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), and master thief Cobb (Leonardo DiCaprio). But it is so rather more than that, happening in dreams within dreams within dreams.

Inception, like Total Recall and The Matrix, is ready perception. The audience isn’t sure what reality is since the protagonist isn’t sure what’s real. There are clues providing evidence for the $64000/not real theories, however the best movies of this form don’t come down on one side or another. Total Recall ultimately had enough clues indicating the “right” way. The Matrix stumbled after it made it clear that reality was fiction, thereby losing an audience who enjoyed the tantalizing mystery. Like such a lot of mysteries, once the fact was revealed it wasn’t quite as exciting as all of us hoped. Inception wisely avoids providing answers.

Inception is likewise a thought experiment. The central conceit of Inception is that when you place a thought in someone’s head it’s like an epidemic, incapable of being removed. Really, trying to not give some thought to the assumption causes the mind to only give attention to it more. This idea, a key tenet of neuro-linguistic programming (NLP), is a part of how our brains are wired. Director Chris Nolan knows exactly what he’s doing when the characters explain the basis. It’s the key argument between Cobb and his wife Mal (Marion Cotillard): is that this life only a dream?

Once you get it into your head as to which ones is ideal, Inception burrows into your psyche and also you see all of the evidence you must reinforce the basis. There are enough discrepancies to suspect that Cobb’s stuck in a dream, but there are enough rules defining reality that indicate otherwise. Unless, needless to say, you think that Cobb is fooling himself by making up said rules to convince himself he isn’t in a dream when he actually is. If that sounds confusing, Inception’s done its job.

Inception is just a little too long in places, testing the viewer’s patience because it delves four levels deep into the subconscious, each with different timeframes, settings, and plots. Portion of the joys is watching the movie again to see for clues that reinforce what we secretly thought we knew all along.

Me? I’m convinced i do know the fact. But then maybe Inception put that concept in my head.

Acclaimed filmmaker Christopher Nolan directs a world cast on this sci-fi actioner that travels around the world and into the sector of dreams. Dom Cobb (Leonardo DiCaprio) is the right there’s at extraction: stealing valuable secrets contained in the subconscious in the course of the mind’s vulnerable dream state. His skill has made him a coveted player in industrial espionage but additionally has made him a fugitive and price him dearly. Now he may get a second chance if he can do the impossible: inception, planting an concept in preference to stealing one. In the event that they succeed, Cobb and his team could pull off the ideal crime. But no planning or expertise can prepare them for a damaging enemy that seems to foretell their every move. An enemy only Cobb can have seen coming.

Into the Blue [Blu-ray] – $19.95

One truly fantastic thing about this movie is that it’s not in the slightest degree pretentious, overblown, pompous, overrated, or heavy handed. Neither does it hit you over the pinnacle with an overload of CGI and lighting tricks nor wallow in personal issues like such a lot of film today.

This movie is essentially a swimming trunks and bikini action adventure flick. so, if want some good shots of Jessica Alba (Sam) in a bikini swimming – this movie is for you.

But there’s more to “Into the Blue” than that. And it’s not a youngster variety of film (i do not believe there’s one teenager in it, although ofcourse they might enjoy it like anybody else). Jessica Alba was probably about 23 years old when she was making the movie – and Paul Walker (Jared) was not less than 31.

i’m not likely into basic plot details (that have been done by others here) – only some fun observations.

Sam has a kissy-kissy ralationship with boyfriend Jared. within the first half the film this actually becomes a turn off – it was funny when one of the vital characters actually tells them to basically ‘knock it off ‘ after they start in on certainly one of their run-of-the-mill kissing scenes. something more about turn-offs within the movie, *(SPOILER – WITHOUT TELLING YOU WHO OR HOW)* when one of the vital main characters gets seriously injured and dies there’s hardly any real or true concern for her life expressed by anyone.

But the film does mangage to finally get into some actual story-telling with some good twists and turns. a little far-fetched and drawn out near the top but that is what makes it fun!!.

So for me “Into the Blue” gets 4 stars; it has an excellent moral to it – concerning the real treasure present in one’s own heart, it had good nature photograghy of the sea — and it was just plain fun!!

It turned out to be pretty good.

Move directly to “Planet Earth” for everything this bluray isn’t…

I normally refrain from posting negative reviews in case it is a question of taste and that i might be in conflict with people in that respect.

However for this reason i’m pretty sure it is a title to prevent for everyone. Especially when there may be such an alternate as Planet Earth which presents 100 times the content and imagery this IMAX adaptation strives to deliver.. and fails..

First of all, this can be a very lousy transfer. They did not bother remastering the 40 minute footage and the “dirt” of the master is visible in every frame. It should not have taken an enormous team to edit them out. Frankly it is the most disappointing bluray transfer I’ve seen out of the 40 or more bluray titles i’ve got.

Secondly, the narration, disjointed topics, duration of most of the space imagery which drag on for minutes with none movement contribute to a mindnumbingly boring viewing experience. You’ll notice you will be hardpressed to not forward to the subsequent scene some other minute (and let’s admit it, there will not be that many firstly)

There’s also an older similar bonus segment within the bluray, with even worse visuals and mostly resembling SD rather than HD in lots of places..

In short, I’d strongly suggest you skip this bluray in favor of the lovely Planet Earth if you have not grabbed it yet.

Never have I been so moved by a sequence to exclaim in wonder and really shed tears of joy on the beauty that surrounds us in this wonderful planet.

I has been watching it on Discovery HD Theater when it premiered in March. The primary episode “Pole to Pole” set the tone by showing the diversity of life and species that exist on the earth. The following episodes delve into the habitats one at a time. Mountains, Fresh Water, Caves, Deserts, Ice Worlds, Great Plains, Jungles, Shallow Seas, Seasonal Forests and Deep Ocean are the next episodes. Here’s one series that must be seen to be believed of what the intrepid cameramen of BBC/Discovery Channel had been capable of capture through their sheer perseverance in remote locations. The HD technology has captured some scenes and pictures never seen before and a few seen before but never with this clarity and sweetness. 5 years, 62 countries and 204 locations is what it took to make this series, and the result’s an entire life TV series.

This is one series that fascinated my kid up to it amazed me. She desired to watch her cartoons however the moment the episode began she was captivated. Either one of us shared together the sweetness it really is our Planet and it was she who mentioned the topic of what we would be doing to it by our actions. We cried after we saw how polar bears have begun to drown as ice melts faster per annum. Identical to one lone bear attempting to walk on ice but falling into the slushy waters, and having to swim longer distances to capture food and at last dying with exhaustion was heart breaking. The series makes no references to the current conditions, just in passing as with the polar bear. i believe the administrators and producers of the series just desired to show us the wonderful thing about the wildlife, the fight for survival of several animals even if there isn’t any climactic change. And as we keep watching and are full of awe and wonderment that we’re lucky enough to live to tell the tale this planet, we commence to comprehend quietly in our hearts how we have to change today in order for we save our planet.

That is what my daughter felt on her own, she asked me why we weren’t doing more to save lots of our wildlife and that i didn’t have any good answers. The last 3 episodes, Planet Earth: The longer term delve deeper into these issues, which i have not had a gamble to determine yet.

I watched a clip of David Attenborough’s version video on the internet before i began watching the series with Sigourney Weaver’s narration, and that i was disappointed by her blandness and shortage of depth. i purchased this set like many others to hear Sir David’s narration. i used to be torn between the regular DVD set and the HD DVD though. This series is right enough to make me buy an HD DVD player simply to be capable to watch it in its true form! However, the regular set has the longer term series and the Planet Earth diaries which the HD set doesn’t have. I loved the Planet Earth Diaries (or backstage) with cameramen, it made an enticing documentary on it’s own, and wished some were longer. In the event that they had the additional material within the HD DVD set, it’s going to were my first choice.

I had saved the invention HD Theatre epidodes on my HD Cable box and that i was in a position to compare their image quality with this Standard DVD version playing on an upconverting DVD player. The invention Theater images were crystal clear, and also you could literally see each grain of sand at the sea bed or each crevice on a rock face. The traditional DVD looked pretty good when upconverted to 720p and if I had not seen the HD version i’d were quite amazed with the picture quality. At this time i have been spoilt by the invention Theater version. If you are considering the HD version it is a great choice in case you have an HD DVD/BluRay player. You’ll likely not see the next HD disc. This series was shot completely in HD format. From my experience within the media industry i will be able to inform you that it is a very, very expensive format to shoot in especially given the 5 years that it took to make this series. Most television is shot in a daily digital format after which upconverted to the HD format later. That provides great images but they can not compare to something shot totally in HD. That’s the reason the picture quality of this series is spectacular. In HD they were capable of capture the action which when replayed in slow-motion also stays crystal clear. Therefore you may have breathtaking images of a shark capturing its prey (and so on) in slo-mo.

This really is the set to shop for. It’s like a living documentation of the wonderful thing about our earth, a number of which was beginning to disappear right because the cameras were rolling. Perhaps, for this reason BBC and Discovery spared free of charge to supply this series and it’s a masterpiece.

What was said in regards to the Dark Knight can’t be elaborated on – so I won’t. The film is muscling its way into my #1 favorite comic movie adaptation of all time.

The reason behind my review is in hopes of saving you some money. This double disc Special Edition doesn’t deliver the value you pay for it. There’s not even deleted scenes!!! i’d save your very hard-earned dollars and purchase the one disc version and stay up for the inevitable ULTIMATE re-release to be able to come in a while down the line.

But nonetheless, an excellent film – you won’t be dissapointed; I just wish the studio would have given a more in-depth Special Edition release than what we have got here. So enjoy!

Star Wars: The Complete Saga (Episodes I-VI) [Blu-ray] – $139.99

There are occasions you lower expectations, that’s wise, since you don’t turn out to be disappointed. But then there are occasions where you can not lower them enough. Here’s one in every of them. At $90.00 (from Amazon, in order that means after the 30% discount), i will safely say that the imminent Star Wars blu-ray set is nothing greater than a contrived, corporate cash-grab designed to use fans.

Yep, I said it, and it’s something I never thought i might say. Disgruntled fans had been claiming this for years, so the charge is nothing new. But I never really saw it formerly. In the event you haven’t seen the “specs” for this set, head over to the official site, then come again to my rant. (Note: This review is a discussion of the recently released specs of this set in order that fans can better judge whether or not they like to buy it)

1. I wasn’t expecting the unique version of the classic trilogy. That it wouldn’t be included was made clear early on. Frankly, while I understand fans’ ire that it is not been made available in anamorphic widescreen, I’ve always thought the Special Edition versions, particularly the 2004 version, had more going for them than not. So i cannot in good conscience say that i am missing them. But i’m disappointed for those fans who’re, and that this is not without equal Edition box set that such a lot of have been hoping for, and expecting, which, just like the Blade Runner (or Aliens) set, contained different versions of the film via branching technology. That would’ve been the value the cost.

2. No mention of a brand new HD transfer means some thing. This set is the inferior 2004 transfer. it is disappointing. It means the flicks is probably not presented within the best high-definition quality that’s currently available and in use by practically every film that’s been released on blu-ray for the previous few years. Lucas is again going with the “it’s more than enough” motto that he is been touting because the Empire Strikes Back (only with that film, the producer and director wisely ignored him and created a masterpiece). I predicted this may be the case, so i can not say I’m shocked. But for the worth-tag, it’s unacceptable. What does it mean to most individuals? Not likely much. It may likely look better than the DVD versions. But unlike it will. It can and should’ve looked spectacular. But, profiting from the truth that only the videophiles know what it means to do a formal 4k transfer, it wasn’t done.

3. In line with the wording of the click release, the deleted scenes, alternate scenes, and extended scenes aren’t incorporated into the flicks, but available only on separate discs. It truly is my major bone of contention, because the films should’ve been reworked into extended editions (ala the hugely popular The Lord of the Rings EEs). For fans who were looking ahead to the “ultimate editions” even before 2004, here is disappointing. Because it stands, these as-yet unseen scenes represent the sole value-related content in this set. However the incontrovertible fact that they’ll occur on Youtube in an issue of an afternoon after the set’s released definitely diminishes their value. And why isn’t there an in depth listing of the scenes? And even what percentage? You gotta love how this press release that’s alleged to “reveal all” leaves out pertinent information.

4. There isn’t a word on whether they corrected the various errors that appeared at the 2004 DVD editions. We do not even know if he replaced puppet Yoda in TPM with a digital version, which was assumed could be the case for it slow. But, as we will be able to see, it might be foolish to imagine anything with this release. What’s aggravating is the undeniable fact that this knowledge hasn’t been put available. Again, this press-release was promoted as a “reveal all,” not a “reveal a bit more.”

5. However the surprisingly worst feature of this set is the documentaries. Not less than, I expected many of the 100 hours of latest documentary footage that Rick MaCullum excitedly pointed out in 2007. But apart from 25 minutes about TESB, there’s nothing. Frankly, that’s absurd, because it means that it’s being held back for a future release. And so as to add insult to injury, they’ve instead included very niche documentaries, 84 minutes concerning the 501st (the crowd that dresses like stormtroopers and other armored characters from the flicks). No offence to these guys, and this would’ve been a cute documentary had there been proper docs in regards to the films on here, but as probably the most primary special features, that isn’t enough. Any other one is a fluff piece called “Spoofs” and it’s 91 minutes of clips from a number of the spoofs which have been available online for years! Why is that this needed when such a lot of things that should’ve been wear here weren’t? Any other two useless documentaries are “Anatomy of a Dewback,” which, believe it or not, is set the lighting tricks that went into making the ’97 Special Editions. Considering the fact that a number of those effects were later redone for the 2004 version (Jabba specifically), is that this not the foremost pointless thing ever? “Here is a documentary about how we did bad CGI back in 1996.” Any other documentary is Star Wars Tech, that is the shorter of both History Channel specials that aired many years back. Oddly enough, the lengthier and much more interesting one (The Legacy Revealed) isn’t included.

On the positive side (and, yes, this could be a brief list), we’re getting:

1. The unique documentaries from ’78, ’80 and ’83, namely The Making of Star Wars; The Empire Strikes Back: SPFX, and Classic Creatures: Return of the Jedi. In case you are like me, these hold a unique place for your heart. I’m glad to work out them confirmed on here, as they’d been expected. I just didn’t think they’d be the only real documentaries (not counting the brand new short on TESB) of the movies. Also (as stated by several fans), there is not any From Star Wars to Jedi doc, no Empire of Dreams, no The start. i suppose they’re being held back too, though it might be nice if we were informed what Lucas’ plans are in order that we do not have to maintain triple and quadruple dipping on these sets.

2. The deleted, alternate, extended scenes. Here’s really the sole thing that could tempt me to choose up this set. But I’m nowhere near convinced they’re alone well worth the price, especially as i believe that: a) in too decades time, there’ll be another set that includes extended editions of the movies, that’s how i need to look these scenes; b) some genius will do what Lucas should’ve done and insert them into bootleg versions of the movies.

3. DTS 6.1. Great to finally have DTS, but to nitpick, it should’ve been 7.1. (Does anyone else remember when Lucas was at the innovative of technology?)

Unless i locate out that they did a ton of labor at the 2004 transfers, what this set currently represents to me is mediocrity, laziness and greed. i actually feel that rather than screwing around with The Clone Wars animated series, Lucas should’ve been preparing the blu-ray set to finish all blu-ray sets. There has been certainly numerous time to try this one right. The prequels can stand improvement, and Return of the Jedi needs work. A re-edited, extended version of those films with many of the “lost” scenes would’ve made for an actual EVENT! Surprisingly, though, the most important bone of contention i’ve is the undeniable fact that he held back at the new documentary footage for a yet-undisclosed future set. And that just makes me mad. It signifies that in another five to seven years, they’ll release another expensive box-set, probably a 3D one, a good way to include part or all of that footage, using it–as they’re the deleted scenes in this set–as a lure to suck in fans once again.

Multi-tiered releases became the rule of thumb instead of the exception on this industry. But inside the current financial climate we’re in, to value this set at a catalogue of $140.00 is obscene because there’s nothing here worth that, and admittedly, it isn’t even worth what Amazon’s charging. No way, no how! i will be able to care for multi-tiered releases if the cost is affordable, and there is some bang to your buck. But not for films which were available in the market for years (decades in terms of the OT), released multiple times, and now with little added value from the last set.

IF it seems that the flicks was significantly improved from the 2004 versions, it would be a worthwhile purchase. But a poor HD transfer, old documentaries which have been available as bootlegs for years, and an unknown amount of out-of-context deleted scenes doesn’t a $90.00 ticket make.
